Since the end of 2012 Libertas International established a partnership with Toros University in the frame of international cooperation. We aim to promote intercultural dialogue and providing new cultural and language skills to young people from Turkey and European Union countries.

In 2013 two graduated young people from Spain stayed 3 months teaching Spanish language to Toros University students.  Also in September 2013 one more member of Libertas International went to Mersin to support the International Relations Office of the Toros University in a frame of volunteerism.

Because Toros University is growing up and creating more partnerships with universities from Spain and France on the frame of ERASMUS+, we want to create an opportunity for both Turkish students and Spanish/French young people ready to take an adventure and discover a new culture and language.

The project will host 2 teachers (1 for Spanish language and 1 for French language) at the Toros University during the second semester of the academic year 2013/2014.

Interns will work full time, teaching 5 different groups for level BEGINNER. Maybe for the Spanish language there will be a group for upper beginner, because last year some students were already learning Spanish language. The two interns will learn about the grading system of the Toros University, and will be considered as other university teachers.

The second semester starts on the 24th of February 2014, so the interns are expected to arrive at least 1 week before in order to get familiar with the facilities and settle down in their apartment.

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

–       To hold a university degree

–       Speak fluently English language (in order to communicate with the students)

– To be member of Libertas International youth organisation

–       To have very good communications and social skills

–       To have some previous experience teaching French/Spanish and show evidence of that

–       To be tolerant with Turkish students who do not speak English, (sometimes the teacher will need to use audio-visual resources and non-formal education tools for teaching)

–       To respect the Turkish culture  and be ready for discovering Mersin

The interns will live in a shared apartment in Mersin in individual rooms, next to the university dormitories. They will have breakfast and dinner in the dormitories, and lunch in the restaurant of the university for free.

During weekends meals are not provided.

The interns will receive 100 euros pocket money monthly (approximately 270 Turkish liras).

The program does not cover travel costs or health insurance. We recommend you to bring it with you.

Mersin is a large city and a port on the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey. It is part of an interurban agglomeration – the Adana-Mersin Metropolitan Area – and lies on the western part of Çukurova, a geographical, economical and cultural region. According to Evliya Çelebi, the city is named after the Mersinoğullari clan; another theory is that it is made from the myrtle (Greek: μύρτος, μυρσίνη) which grows abundantly in the region.[2]

Mersin is important for Turkey’s economy, and Turkey’s largest seaport is located there. Mersin’s nickname within Turkey is “Pearl of the Mediterranean” (Turkish: Akdeniz’in İncisi) and the city hosted the 2013 Mediterranean Games.

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, as of 2011 the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality had a population of 913,958..

Mersin is very open-minded city, with great weather, affordable prices and many cafés. The most popular places to go are Forum, Marina and Pozcu. Not far from the city there are very beautiful beaches and places for sightseeing.
